During my Hydra discussion with Melbourne's Greek Community
Centre yesterday I was struck at the number of questions surrounding the
building of ships on the island. Shipbuilding in the Aegean is thousands of
years old and even into my own childhood small woodworking sheds would turn out
the iconic Aegean caiques now on the endangered species list. This is a much
loved craft that took Greeks and others all over the world, and to see it
disappear is a tragedy for the global commons…
