Έκθεση: HYDRA BOOK CLUB 2025 – ΤΟ ΥΨΗΛΟ - THE SUBLIME
Το ΓΑΚ/Ιστορικό Αρχείο – Μουσείο Ύδρας ανακοινώνει με χαρά την έναρξη της ετήσιας έκθεσης Hydra Book Club 2025, που φέτος είναι αφιερωμένη στο θέμα του Υψηλού.
Η έκθεση εγκαινιάζεται την Παρασκευή 5 Σεπτεμβρίου 2025 και ώρα 9:00 μ.μ., στους χώρους του Ιστορικού Αρχείου – Μουσείου Ύδρας, και θα διαρκέσει έως τις 26 Οκτωβρίου 2025.

Για πέμπτη συνεχόμενη χρονιά, το Hydra Book Club ζωντανεύει τη λογοτεχνική και πολιτιστική σκηνή του νησιού, αποτελώντας πλέον θεσμό που τιμά και προβάλλει τη μακρά παράδοση της Ύδρας στον χώρο των γραμμάτων και των τεχνών. Η φετινή διοργάνωση αντλεί έμπνευση από το Υψηλό – το συγκλονιστικό, απέραντο, εξαίσιο και υπερβατικό – έννοια που απασχόλησε φιλοσόφους, συγγραφείς και καλλιτέχνες από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι σήμερα.
Η έκθεση περιλαμβάνει σπάνιες και σύγχρονες εκδόσεις, έργα Ελλήνων και διεθνών συγγραφέων, καθώς και μια σειρά παράλληλων εκδηλώσεων, αναγνώσεων και παρουσιάσεων. Στόχος είναι να δοθεί στο κοινό η δυνατότητα να ανακαλύψει εκ νέου την πλούσια λογοτεχνική παράδοση, μέσα από έναν εκλεκτικό διάλογο ανάμεσα στο παρελθόν και το παρόν.
Το Ιστορικό Αρχείο – Μουσείο Ύδρας, με ιδιαίτερη χαρά, φιλοξενεί για άλλη μια χρονιά αυτήν τη σημαντική πολιτιστική συνάντηση, που αναδεικνύει τη διαχρονική σχέση του νησιού με τις τέχνες και τα γράμματα.

SUBLIME

HYDRA BOOK CLUB 2025

 This September, the Hydra Book Club will animate the island’s literary scene for the fifth consecutive year.
The Hydra Book Club is a mainstay of the cultural community of the island, anchored here by our annual exhibition in the Historical Archives Museum.
 What was initially planned as a temporary exhibition has evolved over the past five years into an anticipated annual literary and cultural event. Hydra is home to many artists, writers, and thinkers, attracts diverse international visitors, and has an active cultural season. The social and communal effect of the Book Club has resonated through the island’s different populations, and our publishing projects now allow us to engage far beyond its shores.
A survey of works from the nearly 100 years of an uninterrupted literary scene on Hydra remains the basis of this unique event. This solid foundation supports our thematic curation which invites readers to discover and revisit great writing from both on and off the island. The presentation includes an exciting mix of new, vintage, and exceptional rare editions and an accompanying program of readings and events.
For this, our fifth, year, we invite our readers to encounter the Sublime, the astonishing, vast, terrible, exalted, boundless, transcendent, infinite, tremendous, overwhelming, divine, and awesome.
 The Sublime has long fascinated writers, artists, and philosophers, from antiquity to today. Our encounter with the Sublime begins with a 1st Century Greek literary critic who wrote what is the first known text on the subject as a philosophy – through the lens of mostly Homerian literature. Longinus wrote Περὶ Ὕψους (On the Sublime in ancient Greek), available to us only in fragments, focusing on language as the earthly expression of the Sublime. In modern Greek, Ὕψους has become Υψηλό, meaning great height, loftiness, something superlative to height. Our selection moves swiftly into the modern and contemporary eras and will feature our trademark ecclectic selection of work by writers such as Sulaiman Addonia, Anne Carson, Rachel Cusk, Phoebe Giannisi, Philip Hoare, Amanda Michalopoulou, Eleni Sikelianos, Marguerite Yourcenar, George Sarantaris, Mary Shelley, and a new translation of George Seferis’ work - to name just a
few. We will also feature books and periodicals from new Greek publishers such as Hyper Hypo, Kyklada Press, and Nomas.
Each year we evolve and grow with our community, honoring the literary scene of Hydra. This is most evident in our publishing projects. The third volume of the Journal of the Hydra Book Club features a new group of Greek and international contributors writing about the Sublime. This annual journal of fiction, poetry, essay and image enables co-editor Filip Niedenthal and I to engage with a range of writers, artists, curators, critics, and photographers both on and off the island of Hydra. The new periodical Glotta, an annual collection of thematic essays, joins our family of Hydra-based publications.
 Finally, this year we will present the first in a new series of literary works published by the Hydra Book Club. We are proud to launch this series with the poetic work, Sewer Lock, by Peter Thickett. We met Peter here on Hydra where he first conceived the work. This new endeavor is the logical extension of our support for the writers and artists on the island today.
